I’ve contributed to the debate on the row between Ed Miliband and the Daily Mail, over the Mail’s vicious attacks on “Red Ed” and his late Marxist father Ralph Miliband, claiming Ralph hated this country although he fled to Britain to escape the Nazis – who, ironically, the Daily Mail supported!
The Guardian and others have brought up the subject of Lord Rothermere (the great grandfather of the current owner of the Daily Mail) supporting the Black Shirts (led by Oswald Mosley). [The particular brand of nationalism adopted by “One Nation” Red Ed would have doubtless appalled Ralph, of course.]
See http://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/oct/01/daily-mail-refuses-apologise-ralph-miliband to which I have posted the following comment:
While on the subject of the media attacking deceased fathers of political leaders, it is surely worthwhile to remind your readers of an article you carried in April 2012 about David Cameron’s father Ian making an estimated fortune of £10 million through the use of tax havens.
“Ian Cameron took advantage of a new climate of investment after all capital controls were abolished in 1979, making it legal to take any sum of money out of the country without it being taxed or controlled by the UK government.”
So, basically, Thatcher’s government enabled their friends in big business (including Ian Cameron) avoid tax on a massive scale – something that, if overcome, would do a massive amount to tackle the deficit. So much for the need for austerity!
I’d post this as a comment on the Daily Mail website, but they are moderated in advance there – I wonder why!
