Protesting against the G8 summit in N Ireland (in Enniskillen plus events in Britain)

I recently uploaded the song of mine “Do They Know It’s G8 Time?” (the first I sang, which together with “The Revolution Starts Now!” I did for the 2005 G8 summit in Scotland):

At a time when departments in the Con-Dem government in the UK, including the military, are seriously considering raiding the international aid budget, endorsed by David Cameron (see for example), when Bono (who co-wrote, with Midge Ure, the song mine is based on) is being attacked and supported (see and when we have a new G8 summit in the UK this year, the issue of “making poverty history” is back on the agenda.

This year, it takes place in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, on 17-18 June.

There is a Facebook page about events in London and beyond (particularly 10-14 June) to oppose the summit at, a page for the summit at and an event to march to the venue in Enniskillen on Monday 17 June at (from Enniskillen library to the venue assembling at 6.30pm). There is also the website (particularly useful for those not on Facebook).

  1. The further extraordinary revelations by whistleblower Edward Snowden – who exposed the US’s massive surveillance programme PRISM, monitoring the contents of (rather than just “meta-data” of, meaning who has contacted whom) emails, Facebook postings, web searches, phone calls, etc., around the world (which I argue is designed to stop world socialism from happening by establishing what is best described as world fascism in my blog entry – that the British spy centre GCHQ spied on supposed allies around the time of the G20 summit in 2009, according to The Guardian (

“Foreign politicians and officials who took part in two G20 summit meetings in London in 2009 had their computers monitored and their phone calls intercepted on the instructions of their British government hosts, according to documents seen by the Guardian. Some delegates were tricked into using internet cafes which had been set up by British intelligence agencies to read their email traffic.”

I wrote a song called “Do They Know It’s G20 Time?”, and recited it at the “Put People First” demo just before the summit – find it at

David Cameron’s proposals on opposing tax avoidance, which is crucial to ensure that most of the wealth of poor countries doesn’t end up in the pockets of the ultra-rich via tax havens (as is opposing corruption as exposed by this evening’s Channel 4 News – see but note that the spying claims included on that page didn’t make their way into the news programme) are totally inadequate, since it is only tax inspectors in different countries rather than investigative journalists, charities and non-governmental organisations, who will be able to find out who owns assets in tax havens. I have set up a Facebook group called “$21 trillion hidden by rich global elite – close all tax havens, loopholes” at
